About Certificate of Status for New Zealand Citizens in Australia (CSNZCA)

Certificate of Status

If you are a New Zealand citizen who has applied for and been granted a permanent resident visa, you do not need this certificate. You may however be eligible for a Certificate of Evidence of Residence Status (CERS) if you are unable to check your immigration status through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system and require proof of your status as Australian permanent resident.
See: Certificate of Evidence of Residence Status

Information on New Zealand citizens is available on the department’s website.

New Zealand citizens who are Eligible New Zealand Citizens

Not all New Zealand citizens are eligible for a CSNZCA.  Only New Zealand citizens who meet the definition of ‘Eligible New Zealand Citizen’ may require and be issued with a CSNZCA.

A CSNZCA is an official certificate, made under administrative arrangements, which confirms your status as an Eligible New Zealand Citizen for Centrelink purposes.
See: Eligible New Zealand citizen

The department will only issue a CSNZCA on request and only if you are an Eligible New Zealand Citizen who needs evidence of your status for certain social security income benefits.

A CSNZCA:

  • is not used as proof of permanent residency status.  If you are a New Zealand citizen, you do not automatically become a permanent resident upon entry into Australia.
  • should not be used for the purpose of obtaining an Australian passport
  • is not a document of identity, but a certificate confirming that the holder is an Eligible New Zealand Citizen, for Centrelink purposes
  • should not be used for non-Centrelink purposes
  • will be signed and stamped with a crown seal.

Additional information on New Zealand citizens who were affected by the 2001 changes is available.
See: Fact Sheet 17 - New Zealanders in Australia

There are alternative options with obtaining information on your residence status and work entitlements by using the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system or the Employer’s Immigration Hotline.

Arrivals prior to the mid 1980s

If you arrived in Australia prior to the mid 1980s and have not travelled from Australia since your first arrival, you may not have your details electronically recorded in current departmental systems. If you fall into this category and you are an Eligible New Zealand Citizen, you may request a CSNZCA to confirm your immigration status for Centrelink purposes.
